ICN tips
For a successful Iowa Communications Network experience

Microphone
Press the bar on the microphone when you start speaking and release it when you finish. You need to be 12" to 18" from the microphone and talk normally.

Camera position
Sit in the center of the front two rows so people at other sites can see you. You may use the overhead and teacher camera. Use the computer touchscreen at the front of the classroom to select different video equipment. Your instructor or a technical support person can talk you through the process.

Sound
If the volume level seems too high or low, adjust the volume knob found under the left side of the podium. A level around "5" is usually acceptable.

Telephone/fax
Most ICN classrooms have a phone and fax, often located in the front of the room. Dialing the three digits that corresponds to another ICN site will call that site. If no one answers after several rings, the fax tone may sound. If you are sending a fax from one ICN room to another, the system automatically signals the fax machine and the phone will not ring in the other ICN room. The phone and fax numbers are the same. Some rooms have an ICN site directory near the fax machine. If no directory is available, visit the ICN Web site or call (515) 242-3182.

Weather cancellations

If Iowa State classes are canceled due to severe weather, all ICN classes are also canceled. Even if Iowa State is open, the host institution where you go for ICN classes may be closed. Notify your instructor or ISU Continuing Education to receive a videotape of the class session. Call (800) 262-0015 or e-mail dlcourses@iastate.edu

Listen to your local radio station before traveling to sites when weather conditions are questionable.

Videotapes

If you miss an ICN class due to weather cancellation or technical problems at your site, a videotape of the class session will be provided free. Notify your instructor or ISU Continuing Education. Personal copies of ICN sessions for other than weather or technical problems must be approved by your instructor and will be billed to your credit card. The charge is $7.50/hour plus handling, price subject to change.

Assistance

During a session, call Iowa Public Television, (515) 242-3182, from the ICN room and the staff will try to assist you. If you have any questions, call Continuing Education, (800) 262-0015.

ADA accommodations will be provided upon request.
