Master of Science in Statistics

via CD-ROM to employees of companies who sign a letter of agreement

The Department of Statistics offers courses and the degree option to employees of companies who sign a letter of agreement. Students at these companies earn exactly the same degree as the students on campus and fulfill the same program requirements, including the written M.S. exam, creative component, and a final oral exam. The program is 30 credits.

With distance learning, onsite visits from professors, mail, e-mail, Internet class sites, and phone calls, many students never visit campus until they take their oral exams.

The Department of Statistics at Iowa State University has a rich tradition of developing quantitative methods for researchers in a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines. George Snedecor joined the mathematics faculty in 1913 and taught courses emphasizing the importance of careful experimental design and the application of statistical methods. In 1937, Snedecor wrote "Statistical Methods", a landmark text. Later editions have been revised by members of the Iowa State statistics department and are still used across the world by researchers in many disciplines.

In 1994, the statistics department signed an agreement with General Motors Corporation to deliver a Master of Science to GM employees. Since then, 3M, Mayo Clinic, Wells Fargo, John Deere, and Metro Health have signed agreements with Iowa State.
