If
you already have college-level proficiency in certain subject
areas, consider earning credit by examination. Discuss your
test-out plans with your adviser to verify whether the credit
earned can be applied to your program. Test-out credit is
recorded during the semester the exam is taken. Once recorded,
the test-out credit will appear on your degree audit and
permanent record. Credit is available by several methods.
Departmental
Test-Out Exams
Departmental examinations are offered by many of Iowa States
academic departments to allow credit in certain courses.
These exams are offered at the beginning of each semester,
and are usually administered in the department on campus.
You need to register well in advance of the test date.
Contact
the department that teaches the course to find out if a
test-out is available and the cost. The department can also
give you information on whether you should attempt a given
test-out, how to register for the exam, content review recommendations,
and cutoff scores.
