Mentoring and Leadership for K-12 Chinese Teachers
Course: Curriculum and Instruction (CI) 593J, XA

In this 10-day summer institute, K-12 Chinese teachers will explore key concepts and principles related to mentoring, leadership, and change. They will collaboratively develop standards-based, thematically focused, and culturally rich Chinese teaching materials and experiment with compelling classroom applications of emerging technologies such as blogs, podcasts, digital storytelling, and wikis. They will learn to use these technologies to disseminate materials and expand their mentoring and leadership to the profession at district and state levels.

At the summer institute, participants will develop, refine, and synthesize their professional knowledge, skills, and expertise by collaborating to design technology-infused, classroom teaching materials that reflect the best thinking of the profession. Following the summer institute, participants will (a) facilitate learning in their own classrooms through pedagogically sound uses of these materials; (b) use social technologies to reflect on their impact of these instructional approaches and materials and to exchange ideas and information with their institute colleagues and leaders; (c) employ the materials they have developed in conjunction with social technologies and principles of mentoring and leadership, to initiate, implement, and/or sustain change in their local context(s); and (d) expand their professional networks by using social technologies to disseminate materials to colleagues outside their local contexts, engage colleagues in professional conversations, and give professional presentations at state conferences as first steps toward ultimately impacting the regional and national levels.
